Arsenal has officially confirmed the acquisition of Real Sociedad’s Martin Zubimendi, with the club activating the Spanish midfielder’s £51 million (RM253 million) buyout clause.

The 26-year-old, who was part of Spain’s victorious Euro 2024 campaign, had attracted interest from both Liverpool and Real Madrid before choosing the North London club.

Speaking about his transfer, the defensive midfielder expressed his excitement: “This represents a pivotal chapter in my professional journey. It’s exactly the opportunity I was seeking. The moment you arrive here, you immediately understand the magnitude of this institution and squad.”

Zubimendi explained his decision to join Arsenal, citing the club’s playing philosophy as a key factor. “I chose Arsenal because their tactical approach suits my strengths perfectly. They’ve demonstrated their capabilities in recent seasons, and I believe their finest achievements lie ahead.”

According to BBC reports, the total transaction value reaches nearly £60 million (RM298 million), with Arsenal choosing to exceed the release clause amount to structure the payments more favorably.

The Spanish international brings extensive experience, having featured in 236 matches across all competitions for Real Sociedad since emerging from their youth system. He has also earned 19 caps for the national team.

His arrival addresses Arsenal’s midfield requirements following Thomas Partey’s contract expiration and Jorginho’s departure from the club.

The signing strategically positions Arsenal’s record purchase Declan Rice to operate in a more advanced midfield position alongside skipper Martin Odegaard.

Manager Mikel Arteta praised the new acquisition: “Martin possesses exceptional technical ability and tactical understanding that will greatly benefit our squad. He’ll integrate seamlessly and has the qualities to become a cornerstone player for us.”

This marks Arsenal’s second summer recruitment following goalkeeper Kepa Arrizabalaga’s arrival from Chelsea, as the club aims to surpass their three consecutive runner-up finishes in the Premier League.

The Gunners are also reportedly close to finalizing the signing of Brentford’s Christian Norgaard.

Focus now shifts to strengthening the attacking options as Arsenal attempts to overtake Liverpool and Manchester City in pursuit of their first league championship since the 2003/04 season.

Last campaign saw Arteta’s squad struggle without a recognized striker for extended periods due to lengthy injuries sustained by Kai Havertz and Gabriel Jesus.

Side note: Reports suggest RB Leipzig’s Benjamin Sesko and Sporting Lisbon’s Viktor Gyokeres are the primary targets to address the striker position.
